Foliage Follow-up April 2013: Black Mondo grass

Today I join Pam at Digging for Foliage Follow-up with a couple of new plants this spring.  Like many of you I was preoccupied today, but reading the other posts gave me an idea.

I'm excited to have acquired a plant which has been on my list so long I almost forgot about it until the bright red containers caught my eye at Shades of Green nursery recently.  Black Mondo!

A bit on the pricey side, at least this one was priced more like a lunch menu than the dinner menu as is common with this plant.  It was nice and full so I added it to my cart.

I've divided it and put it in a planter temporarily to let it fill in a bit before I move it to the front garden in the fall.

For Foliage Follow-up today Louis at Parallel 49 Palms and Exotics showed his combined with a bright sedum.  The pretty combination reminded me of this recently purchased sedum which I can add for a bright contrast in the container this summer.  Thanks for the inspiration Louis!

To see more foliage from other blogger's gardens check out the comments section of the Foliage Follow-up post at Digging and you might find a good combination or inspiration just like I did.

  1. You really did an amazing job dividing up that mondo grass, I hope it responds with even more lush growth!

    1. Amazing! With our rocky soil and heat I've learned the hard way to give plants like these a head start.

  2. Great merchandising to put black mondo grass in red pots! I still don't understand why this plant is so expensive when it divides & spreads so easily. Must be what the market will bear. You're so smart to divide yours & grow it on before planting it out & the combination with the succulent will be sweet!

    1. I know, it's just a red plastic pot but it has a nice shape and the display near the check out was an attention getter. I just know that I had to wait until I found one that was priced below the "no way" level.

  3. Hope this does spread quickly for you. I have the dark green version, and it spreads easily.
I guess it's the color that makes this special. It should look great, with the lime green succulent.

    1. It's the color because I have never had to pay for the green variety as it walked over from the neighbors house one day and stayed.

  4. I've never even heard of black mondo grass before. It will look great with the light green sedum.

    1. Funny how something as mundane as mondo in a different color can get so much attention.

  6. I never could understand why black mondo grass is so expensive when it spreads so easily. Same story with all sorts of bamboo.

    1. A little bit more expensive maybe, but the difference is 5x or more the green makes no sense. There are a few things like that, I can dig up a native yucca from vacant land nearby for free or pay hundreds for a Y. rostrata.

  7. I remember admiring the black mondo grass in Loree's Danger Garden -- so dramatic! I hope it grows well for you, esp. with that chartreuse sedum. Yummy!

    1. I've already planted cuttings and can't wait to see it grow in this summer.

  8. I planted several small ones in a border but apparently the grass weeds or moss were too much for it and it was disappearing, so I dug up one I could find recently and put it in a pot to try to get it back to a good size. I hope it does well for you in the ground.
