Scene on the Street for Thanksgiving Week

Let's start off this holiday week with an impressive display I spotted from my car a few weeks ago.

"Whoa!  That's nice!"  Even though I was in a hurry I had to stop for a minute.

Cornucopia, mums, the bench it's beautifully done.

Hundreds of neatly placed same-sized pumpkins keep on going along Terrell Road.

A fun drive-by and I look forward to seeing what they do for other seasons.

Foliage Follow-up February 2015: Agaves and the city

Having no idea what I would post for Foliage Follow-up until this afternoon, I spotted this scene as I drove up Broadway, a major thoroughfare in San Antonio.  Quickly cutting (safely) over a couple of lanes to make a quick right, I rolled to a stop and snapped away with my new pocket camera.

I had noticed it a number of times and even thought to stop "sometime".   Sometime was today and isn't this fun?

Scene on the Street: Home on the Plano Range

Over the past few weeks I've written about our trip to the Dallas area in late May.  There's one Plano house that always gets my attention when we visit and this year, with my sister-in-law as a guide, I walked over and took some photos.

The Texas style house with limestone and a standing seam metal roof could be out on a ranch in the country.

Scene on the Street: Another side of the neighborhood

Each spring my neighborhood holds a garage sale weekend for the entire community.  It's a great time to get out, talk to the neighbors, and see what's going on across this roughly one square mile of houses.  The neighborhood was built one house at a time over more than 60 years which makes for an interesting mix of styles.

Today's post features scenes from the older section which is quite popular for its large lots and big trees.  The lack of curbs along the street gives it a country feel.  This house on a large corner lot has an old stone planter with opuntia and a low wall.  The pretty patch of bluebonnets seen in the distance return every year.

When I spotted this garden a few days ago I just had to stop and take photos from the car.  Bluebonnets are often seen in the wild with orange indian paintbrush flowers as a color complement.  The indian paintbrush doesn't seem to do well in captivity in our area while bluebonnets flourish in yards all over town during March.  Bright yellow and orange poppies are an inspired choice to pair with the bluebonnets in this front garden.

Since it's slow in the garden I'm going back through photos for interesting things I've found along the way in the past year or so.

This pie-shaped spot surrounded by two retail parking lots often catches my attention as I drive by.  A tall yucca with opuntia and ornamental grass at the base are good choices for landscaping in our climate.  Nice looking, simple, and low maintenance.  I think David at The Desert Edge would approve of this arrangement although you might not see this combination in the wild.

Scene on the street: Gardens of Southtown

While in the Southtown area of San Antonio for a stop on the Herb Society Garden Tour last week, we took a little time to walk the block to check out neighboring houses and front gardens.  Southtown is a neighborhood of artists studios, local restaurants, and contemporary shops which are revitalizing the area.  It's very close to the popular King William Historic District and is a less expensive option for those who choose to live in town or establish a new business.

Next door on the west side of the "Urban Chic" house shown on tour is this charming cottage with a beautiful coral vine blooming along the fence and a contemporary kinetic sculpture in the yard.
