Happy Independence Day!

Like many neighborhoods in the San Antonio suburbs ours used to be a large ranch.  Several old barbed wire fence remnants were still in place when we first moved here.  A few years ago workers on a road construction project pulled out pieces of that old fencing and tossed them aside.  I picked up a few lengths of barbed wire and wrapped them into rings to hang on the fence.  Last week while looking for a wreath base I wired a couple of those rings together, added flag ribbon and sparkly stars to come up with a perfect door decoration for the Fourth of July holiday.

It's fun to have a wreath with a connection to our home.  A barbed-wire wreath around a Texas star.

Happy Fourth of July!

(Wildlife Wednesday will return in August, those critters are anxious to show off!)

The garden celebrates in Red, White and Blue

It's the Fourth of July and time to display the colors and celebrate the Red, White, and Blue from my garden this week.

Kicking off the festivities with a first-time bloomer and current favorite plant Heartleaf Rosemallow (Hibiscus martianus).  I purchased this native hibiscus from Medina Garden Nursery about 18 months ago and the deer loved to eat the buds (but not the plant) so it never bloomed until we fenced the deer out.

Dynamite Red, Vinca White, and Plumbago Blue for the Fourth!

Red, White, and Blue posts for the Fourth of July have been a tradition at Rock-Oak-Deer--if three years can be considered a tradition.  A year ago this week I published my favorite posts about the gardens at The Warrior Family Support Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and I've been volunteering each week since then to help maintain the gardens.

The Red, White, and Blue garden has reached its peak bloom just in time for Fourth of July celebrations.

Fireworks!

There are all kinds of fireworks around here on Independence Day.

My favorite summer flower in the garden is Gomphrena 'Fireworks'.  Improbably gorgeous color that doesn't fade in our intense sun and heat.  I've never seen it wilt and it returned after our recent mild winter.

Early Summer blooms Part 2: Patriotic colors for Fourth of July

The Fourth of July holiday is coming up this week so I put together a patriotic display of flowers in red, white, and blue from my garden to kick off the celebration.
