Wildlife Wednesday August 2016: Deer, deer, deer

It's the first Wednesday of August and time for Wildlife Wednesday hosted by Tina at "My Gardener Says...".

I walk out into the garden one morning last week and a garter snake slithers away while hummingbirds zip in and out of the Aniscanthus wrightii along with several different bees.  A striking white butterfly I haven't seen before is resting on a bright bougainvillea.  Wildlife Wednesday is coming up!  I don't have my camera!  Returning a few minutes later with the camera to find that all of the above, except a few bees, have vanished.  It's much too hot to sit and wait for their reappearance so we'll take a walk around front to enjoy the neighborhood deer in my neighbor's yard.  Since I can see all of this from my front yard, I'm calling it within the spirit of Wildlife Wednesday.

Good morning!

She moves into the open to make sure things are cool.

A little more..."I guess it's okay".  What's she up to?

"C'mon out little one"

"Maybe we can hide in these crape myrtles"

"See, I'm the same color as the trunks and that dappled shade is good camouflage for fawn".  But I didn't dress properly for that orange construction fence.

Meanwhile, our friend has already crossed the street and is headed for the city limits.

I've mentioned this a couple of times, but it's still fun to point out that a city limit line runs right along that driveway putting the tan stucco house in a different town from mine.  Interestingly, the same mail carrier delivers to all the houses on our street in order of address regardless of town since we share the same zip code.

She's having second thoughts about leaving town?

Back on the other side of the street..."So this is how it's done, you always look both ways."

"Okay, I see mom"

Ha, not a chance!  Driving here always means watching out for deer suddenly bolting into the road.  The first one is usually easy to see, it's the second one that follows which will get hit.  So far, we haven't hit one though it happens several times a year.

  1. My heart melts every time I see deer, especially a fawn. The early influence of 'Bambi' I guess, coupled with the fact that I don't have to deal with the damage they do. I don't feel as warm and fuzzy about raccoons or coyotes.

  4. Awe, nothing more cute than a fawn! You're right about then second on being the unlucky in the road bingo. I liked the first paragraph about all the critters who are in the garden, until you grab the camera. Story of my life....

  6. Sweet mum and fawn! Do they cause a lot of damage in your garden? I don't have deer here, but the rabbits are thick.

    1. They used to but we fenced off the back and I try to only plant deer resistant plants in the front where they still have access.
