Remembering Pearl Harbor Day

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  In 2004 my husband and I had the privilege of being at Pearl Harbor on December 7th for the National Park Service ceremonies.  Nine survivors were on hand to be honored.

The flags behind them represent the ships sunk that day and the states for which they were named (L-R) California, West Virginia, Nevada, Utah, Oklahoma, and Arizona.

The USS Arizona Memorial (white structure) is in the harbor and sits above the sunken ship where 1177 perished, and many remain entombed as a national cemetery.

I wonder how many survivors will be there today.  We will always remember them.

  1. My uncle Frank in San Diego was a Pearl Harbor survivor, but he passed away this March at 95. He and my other late uncle Joe were stationed there together, and were leaving church when they saw the Japanese planes bombing the docked ships. Wild...only been there 2x, but it was a very, very solemn place.

    1. That's an amazing story David. I didn't have any relatives there. We attended a luncheon after the event where we heard stories from two survivors including Senator Inouye who was a 17 year old Civil Defense volunteer at the time. It was quite a day.

    1. It is powerful, especially going out to the Arizona which you can still see just under the surface of the water.
