What's blooming for June 2015? More than enough for a Garden Blogger's Bloom Day post so let's get started with a tour of the circle garden.

National Wildflower Week: The Zexmenia Project and a few other wildflowers
It's National Wildflower Week sponsored by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and I'm celebrating with a post on the latest wildflower project in my garden. I call it the "Zexmenia Project".
About two years ago I planted a native Zexmenia in the circle garden. Zexmenia is quite literally native to my neighborhood and I find it growing in many untended spots within walking distance so it was a natural choice for a native flowering plant in my garden.
Blooming almost non-stop through our hot summers, it was a big success. It's a drought tough, heat tolerant, flowering plant and the deer do not even nibble on it. The only deer damage is if they happen to step on it.

Neighborhood wildflowers for National Wildflower Week
May 4-12, 2013 is National Wildflower Week sponsored by The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.
I'm posting photos of wildflowers growing in a field near my house. The field is commercial property and will be developed eventually. I enjoy walking there and often collect seeds from plants to add to my garden. The area below is a small arroyo which feeds the creek along our backyard.

GBBD May 2012: Mexican Hat Wildflowers
For Garden Blogger's Bloom Day (GBBD) May 2012 I'm featuring Mexican Hat (Ratibida columnifera) wildflowers. These common wildflowers here in south central Texas are currently blooming in my back yard. With their high rounded crowns, it's easy to see why they are commonly known as Mexican Hats. A striking color combination of gold and red.
The color pattern of the flowers on this plant are quite different from the others
Wildflowers are the best flowers for this sunny, rocky slope where little else will reliably grow.
For several years we've been collecting seeds from neglected and undeveloped commercial spots around the edges of our neighborhood and scattering them in the toughest part of the yard to create a wildflower meadow in this existing patch of buffalo grass.
That effort is beginning to pay off with blooms like these.
