Support Your Independent Nursery Month: Milberger's Nursery Revisited

October is Support Your Independent Nursery Month sponsored by Pam Penick at her Austin blog Digging. Each week during October I'll join in by posting a tour of an independent nursery in the South Central Texas area.  Who better to supply us with the plants which grow best in our climate than nurseries owned and staffed by local gardeners?  Local nurseries are an especially good resource for those of us who are turning more and more to native plants in the landscape.

For my first independent nursery tour I'm revisiting Milberger's Nursery in San Antonio.  Last October I posted their Spook-tacular Halloween display with a creepy maze and plenty of great decorations.  On a recent visit I took additional photos to show you how pretty the nursery is on a typical day.

In the entrance area the check-out station and plenty of bougainvillea for fall color are displayed.  I like the idea of bougainvillea for fall blooms since it is better suited to our climate.

Check out those Texas house numbers at the end of the aisle.

They always have plants like these mums for seasonal color near the main aisle.  These are probably a lot more colorful now.  Under the shade arbor in front of the gift area are rows of colorful annuals and herbs in 4-inch pots.  I especially like their extensive herb selection.

Shade plants under the oaks and sun-loving plants like crape myrtle in the open area where the maze and pumpkin patch will be located soon.

More of their quality selection of plants under beautiful live oaks.  Farther back they have an extensive selection of native and adapted trees for our climate.  Although it looks quiet on this Tuesday afternoon, plenty of staff are available to assist with information or locating a specific plant.

Nearby the resident chickens were checking out fruit tree displays for dining options.

More shopping to do on this side of the gift shop.

The shed for potting mixes and plant care products next to the gift shop.  A few spiky plants are displayed in this area.  They have a large cactus area across the parking lot which I featured in my last visit.

Beautiful water feature, one of several throughout the nursery, is featured near the parking lot entrance to the gift shop.

Milberger's Nursery is located at N. Loop 1604 and Bulverde Road in San Antonio and is a full-service nursery offering weekend seminars, some of which focus on children's gardening projects.

Next week I'll post on Fanick's Garden Center in San Antonio.  For more independent nursery visits check out Digging each week in October.

  1. There's nothing quite as satisfying as shopping at local independents...unless it's eavesdropping on your shopping trips.

  2. Oh gosh, now I'm really jealous--realizing you can actively garden all winter long! I'm winding down now--mainly raking leaves, planting some seeds for next year, and checking out the fall colors. That garden nursery looks like a great one--if I lived nearby, I would stop in!

    1. This is our best gardening season which will run until late November. I should have mentioned Milberger's is my closest nursery.

  3. I still have my large Texas Star I purchased there five years ago before my son moved..It was a little pricey however. Have you ever been to Casa Verde Greenhouses?

    1. I find their prices to be a bit better these days and the quality is quite good. I have not been to Casa Verde, I think it is a wholesale only nursery but I will check it out.

    1. I had not seen the chickens roaming before. Always something new and different to see there.

  7. Cool looking nursery! I love that they let the chickens roam about. Chickens make an excellent cleanup crew. I bet they don't have many bugs either.

  8. I'm a sucker for bougainvillea. Whenever a nursery sells them they are cool in my books.
