What can make a deer back off from the water dish? Watch the video all the way to the end, it's only a minute and 19 seconds.
Oh, yeah. I'd back off too! Wonder how he knew?
I'm joining Tina at My Gardener Says..... for Wildlife Wednesday where you can share your wildlife posts and see more wildlife fun in the comments section.
Ha! That is absolutely great! I suppose he just "knew"...though perhaps there was some advance notice offered? That body part in the upright and locked position didn't seem to be for play...
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm pretty sure the scent was quite a warning. The skunk was not playing around for sure.
DeleteWise deer-he knew to give the visitor a wide berth. Ha!! What a tail, btw. Very cute and thanks so much for your post!!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! Great start to the day. Thanks for letting us share in the fun!
ReplyDeleteWow! Pure magic. Thanks for sharing something I would never normally see. Even in retreat a deer shows perfect grace. And hahaha It is almost like the skunk is giving the camera a message too. Clear body language.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great video! Thanks for the chuckle!
ReplyDeleteIt was a little spooky at first but funny later on!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty amazing what happens out there when we're not looking!
DeleteI was afraid a bear or cougar was about to show up so the skunk provided comic relief. I'd run away too! We can tell when they're in our garden as their characteristic perfume announces them, and sends us running to shut our windows.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I can smell them even during the day. There are way too many of them right now.
DeleteWhat fun to get your very own wildlife video! Thank you for sharing it with us. Yes, the deer has obviously had experience; maybe as a fawn like Bambi and Flower (see link), but less friendly ... :-)

Yes, it is like we've seen that before.
DeleteOh my - that is hilarious! Makes me want to place a camera on my water dishes to see what critters show up! I like how the deer not only backed away, but did so cautiously so that he wouldn't startle Monsieur Pepé!
ReplyDeleteSmart guy! So many animals only show up at night, it's been fun to watch them and keep track of our visitors.
DeleteHow funny, Shirley. I was interested to note that the buck had only one antler. I've been waiting until the deer shed their antlers before attempting an uncaging of a couple of small trees in my front garden. Won't be long, I guess. Do you ever find antlers in your garden? I never have seen any in our 'hood. Guess they all get dropped in the greenbelt.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that missing antler too, Pam. I've never found any in our yard but I always ALWAYS look. Usually, while growling to myself... "if you b*astards are going to kill my sumac tree you could at least leave me a shed antler or two as a thank-you gesture!".
DeleteThe buck has one stunted antler in addition to the full size one so he has not shed them yet. I found one antler near the house in an area where the deer sleep. Shed antlers are nearly impossible to find because animals, including deer, will eat them for the calcium and minerals. We found a deer skull in the woods and put it out by the agave and several days later a group of deer were out there eating it!
DeleteI think the same thing Deb, it would be nice to have something for the trouble.
DeleteEw, just saw your reply, Shirley. Cannibalism! ;)
DeleteOh yes, me too. I wonder who goes under or over our fence to drink in our pond....great video Shirley.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to see the visitors at the water dish.
DeleteShirley, that was great fun to watch! I've always wanted to have a camera outside to see what comes at night to our water tubs too. Have you looked around to see if you could find any antlers? I noticed the buck is missing one!
ReplyDeleteHe has one very short antler so it's not missing. I do keep looking but I think it might be a few more weeks before they start dropping. The bucks are pretty scarce right now too.
DeleteOh my, that was pretty fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThis is classic! My guess - the deer knew from a very bad, past experience.
ReplyDeleteSometimes being a little stinker has its benefits. Smart deer! :o)
ReplyDeleteThat was fun! It was neat to see the deer watching the action in the background, too, as he moved away.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! What a giggle - and such a privilege to see. Well filmed!
ReplyDeleteSo funny, the skunk had its tail up all ready. I didn't know they threatened other animals other than self defense.
