First new plant of 2013!

In my last post I asked for recommendations to fill the spot in the front garden where two Texas sages had recently been removed.

The votes were cast by readers, tallied in a secret location, and delivered by computer. The unanimous choice of the Academy of Blog Comments (ABC) was......Envelope please! 

 The "New Mexico Agave" or Agave neomexicana!  Here it is just after I brought it home.  Isn't it cute?



Just look at that awesome leaf ghosting pattern.



Installed this morning in the island bed.


Trying to steal the spotlight from A. ovatifolia as if that's possible.  I like the way it looks here and it just needs a few weeks to recover from the the grower's pot.


A. neomexicana grows to 3' diameter and 18" high.  Drought tolerant and cold hardy.  Just right for this location.  The native plant database states that it is native to Texas and offsets freely.  That's a good thing since I could use more of these as I move toward lower maintenance and higher drought tolerance.

The "after" photo view I always take when I make changes to this side of the yard.  It's a green dot from here but you can always click on the photo to make it larger.

    Yay for the Agave neomexicana! It's a beauty. No doubt to be even better as it grows and settles in.

    The way it suggests the color and shape of the other agave without being a carbon copy is inspired. The gold of the yucca 'Color Guard' Will stand out even more with the blue presence behind them. Hooray for your first new plant of 2013!

    Beautiful - as is your garden! I'm so competitive, when I read your headline my immediate reaction was, "I've got to go buy a plant! I'm getting behind!"

      I actually tried to use plants already available instead of buying new. I'm glad I did go ahead and buy this one, but only because it's the best plant for that spot.

    New Mexico [Agave] never looked so nice...really! And the next time you see "mescal" or hear of the "Mescalero Apache", you can know that you have that very important symbol of the people and their tradition.

    That's one of my favorite agaves, which I admired every time I visited the Wildflower Center until finally I planted one of my own last year. Good choice!
