It's been a tough year for plants in this area. Last summer was especially hard on the Brugmansia I love to grow. The early arrival of hot weather in the spring and hotter than average summer meant no blooms so far this year. Since they require weekly feedings and daily watering, I had considered not growing them again. After digging them up, I parked them on the ground along side the deck and moved on to other projects.
A few days later I spotted this flush of pale yellow blooms on Daybreak and now I think I'll keep them for another year, or two...
Also known as Angels Trumpets they are just beautiful in bloom with a wonderful fragrance in the evening when the flowers are fully open
Seems I'm not the only one finding them irresistible
Gorgeous!! Our neighbor had one in a peach color that was lovely.
ReplyDeleteI planted one last year, and the deer promptly ate it. Yes, I know...they're not supposed to like them.
ReplyDeleteGlad yous came through for you.
Thanks RW, the colors are all gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLinda, that's one of the surprises. The deer eat almost everything I put in that spot but they haven't touched them yet. I'll bring them up on the deck for the winter. So far the deer haven't walked up the steps although I've heard of that too!
Amazing bloom. I bet that plants' pollinator is even more amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks DD, Yes we've had a shortage of bees and butterflies around here and I was amazed to see one show up for a photo.
ReplyDeletePretty flowers. Are Brugmansia winter hardy for you?
ReplyDeleteThanks Bluestem, they do die back in freezes and return in spring. The past two winters have been too cold and they struggled. This year they will be wintered over on the deck with a few other plants. It's a common practice here because of the short duration of our cold fronts.
ReplyDeleteBTW I'm wondering if the Dietes would need some watering to make more flowers. It does come from the summer rainfall side of South Africa.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I think there are Austin gardeners who grow it,though I never have. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful! I'm wondering if these are what I saw at the Botanical Gardens recently. I made a mental note to go back and take notes because they were stunning large blooms.
ReplyDeleteThey really are beautiful. Certainly worth all the extra effort.
ReplyDeleteEE - Thanks for visiting my blog. I enjoyed looking at your beautiful blog. Thanks for the advice too. I'll try watering the Dietes more next summer to see if that's the issue.
ReplyDeleteTina - Cat at The Whimsical Gardener has a Brugmansia photo on her blog this week too.
Mandy - So nice you dropped by, I look forward to checking out another San Antonio blog. The Botanical Gardens usually has a large pink Brugmansia along the walk just past the gift shop/gate area so you probably did see it there.
LR - Thanks, they are usually reliable and easy to grow except in years like this.
